While the rest of the 1st Division fought at Agira, the 3rd Brigade was ordered to take Catenanuova, defended by the German 923rd Fortress Battalion. The first attack took place on 26 and 27 July with the Canadians conquering the Santa Maria and Scalpello mountains. However, the Germans counter-attacked and retook Monte Santa Maria. The Brigade was then placed under the command of the British 78th Division that had just arrived in Sicily. The second attack took place from midnight until the morning of 30 July, beginning with heavy artillery fire and ending with the Canadians occupying Catenanuova and retaking Monte Santa Maria. The terrified population was displaced to the countryside, suffering severe privations.

Il primo attacco avviene il 26 e 27 luglio con i Canadesi che conquistano i monti Santa Maria e Scalpello. I Tedeschi però contrattaccano e riprendono Monte Santa Maria. La Brigata viene posta sotto il comando della 78a Divisione britannica appena arrivata in Sicilia. Il secondo attacco si svolge dalla mezzanotte alla mattina del 30 luglio, inizia con un pesante fuoco dell’artiglieria e con i Canadesi che occupano Catenanuova e si riprendono Monte Santa Maria. La popolazione terrorizzata è sfollata nelle campagne subendo tutte le privazioni.
