The 1st Brigade began the "Battle of Agira" and after heavy artillery fire, Nissoria was occupied on the 24th afternoon. Immediately East of the village, however, on the hills on both sides of State Road 121, there was a strong defensive line held by the German 104th Regiment and Italian units.
Over two days, the Canadian battalions, and Armoured units, attacked repeatedly, but were unsuccessful and took many casualties. Communication difficulties and the lack of synchronization between artillery and infantry were blamed for the 1st Brigades failure.
Before the arrival of the Canadians, the evacuees from Nissoria witnessed the Italian and German troops, who moved their units Westwards. The Nissoria population was tired and weak from the hardships of the war.
