The Canadians first landed in Sicily at the Bay of the Costa dell'Ambra, in the "Bark West" sector. The 1st Brigade landed on “Sugar" Beach, and the 2nd Brigade landed on “Roger" beach.
At 6:45 am, the Division Commander, Maj. Gen. Simonds informed the Commander that he had achieved all of his initial objectives. The 1st Brigade captured the batteries of Case Maucini and then the airport. In the afternoon, the 2nd Brigade, advanced towards Ispica, and clashed with an Italian division, forcing it to retreat.
Witnesses tell of the 'carpet' of ships off the coast of Sicily and terror began to spread among the population, who encountered the Allies for the first time. Numerous Italian soldiers were taken prisoner.
